Conservation, ecosystems, and endangered species.

I began my career as a newspaper reporter and editor before earning a master’s degree from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. I stayed in New York for the next 25 years, eventually moving into the creative and marketing side of television, where I spent much of my career. In 2021, I traded New York for Portland, Oregon, and returned to journalism — this time writing about the natural world.

My current project, Tortoise!, is a work of narrative nonfiction about tortoises, their extraordinary natural history, and the people working across the globe to save them. The book draws on several years of original field reporting, following tortoises and conservationists across deserts, islands, forests, and other landscapes while tracing a story that reaches through deep time and the long arc of natural and human history.

Reporting for Tortoise! has taken me to the Galápagos Islands, Aldabra Atoll, Kenya, South Africa, Madagascar, Bangladesh, St. Helena, the Mojave Desert, and elsewhere. Along the way, I’ve also written about conservation and natural history for Smithsonian, BBC Future, Hakai Magazine, and other publications.

Tortoise! will be published by W. W. Norton & Company in summer 2027.
